New Energy Efficiency Financing Options
The ClimateSmart Loan Program and the Economic Stimulus Act |
On Feb.19, the Boulder County Commissioners approved moving forward with the ClimateSmart Loan Program, which will provide an innovative financing option for residential and commercial renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements throughout the county.
Through the ClimateSmart Loan Program, owners of residential and commercial properties in most of Boulder County will be able to apply for a full financing loan to implement specified energy efficiency and renewable energy measures. The loans will be funded by the sale of bonds and will be repaid through special assessments, included in individual property owner’s property tax statements. The special assessments will remain with the property when the property is sold, unless the seller and buyer agree to some other arrangement. Boulder County residents must attend a workshop to apply for the loans. Workshops locations will occur around the county from Monday, March 10th –Tuesday, March 31st.
Click here for more details or to register for a workshop.
On Feb.17, congress passed an economic stimulus package to increase home energy efficiency. For energy efficiency improvements made in 2009, you can write off 30% of the cost of AC heat pumps, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, biomass stoves, and thermal envelope improvements such as insulation, air-sealing, doors, and windows with an aggregate cap of $1500. For on-site renewables, you can write off 30% of the cost and the cap was lifted. Five billion nationally will go towards the Weatherization Assistance Program.

Green Teen an Example for All
Claire Anderson is doing all that it takes to pursue her ultimate dream |
Goat tending, herb growing and beekeeping aren’t the activities that typically make up your average teenagers day. But then seventeen-year-old Boulder resident Claire Anderson is not your average teenager. With a passion for sustainable agriculture and preservation of the environment, Claire is doing all that it takes to pursue her ultimate dream; own her own zero-waste small organic farm.
“I definitely remember from a really young age wanting a farm,” said Claire. “I just loved seeing things grow and then being around animals; especially farm animals. I just love the land.”
And Claire has been anything but tardy in pursuing her goal. Four years ago she took herself out of the conventional schooling system and designed her own curriculum: one that focused on learning the theory and practicalities of sustainable farming and the preservation of ecosystem dynamics.
Read more of this story, which appeared in the Daily Camera on February 28, 2009. Article written by Boulder resident Jane Palmer. |
